Negotiations update
Posted Sep 29, 2020
We have been in negotiations with PeaceHealth since they unilaterally issued several policies in August 2020:
Mandatory Flu Vaccination: We are incredibly disappointed to report that the employer rejected our proposal to remove the mandatory requirement for flu shots. (You can be exempted only if you have a medical or religious reason with supporting documentation.) They did not have any concerns with compliance. In fact, nurse compliance last year was about 98%. WSNA is not in support of mandatory flu vaccinations, particularly because nurses will not be allowed to work without the flu vaccination. We are continuing to pursue actions to remove this mandatory requirement.
Safety Absolute: The policy states that the first error will result in step 3 corrective action, final written warning. This policy conflicts with the Just Cause provision of our contract. Just Cause entitles you to discipline that is progressive and corrective, not punitive. WSNA will use all legal remedies, including filing grievances, to protect this important provision of our contract. Contact Nurse Rep Hanna Welander to discuss any discipline or disciplinary investigation.
Fourteen-Day Mandatory Travel Quarantine: Initially, the employer refused to allow nurses to use their COVID PTO bank. We took action and won. For employees that were adversely impacted by this policy, the employer agreed that employees could utilize COVID PTO. This covers the period between August 1, 2020 through September 7, 2020. Nurses could also utilize PTO, EIB or take leave without pay. If you were denied COVID PTO and now wish to use it, contact Human Resources to have this adjusted.
Caregiver Excellence Bonus: WSNA supports the additional bonus pay. However, when anything affects your contractual hours, wages, and working conditions, employers are required to notify the unions representing workers and bargain these changes.
