Hospital Staffing Committee/Nurse Practice

Simon Morton, Co-Chair Hospital Staffing Committee March Update:

Staffing committee and Nurse Staffing Committee update.

Agendas were light this week for both committees.

We did not have enough union attendance to address the ADOs (though there was only one this meeting).

Security came and did a presentation on workplace violence. They asked to have more nurse representation on the workplace violence committee and detailed some of the plans they have or will be implementing. If interested in this committee, please reach out or contact security.

A total of 17 FTE were approved for break nurses.

The first of the positions should be getting posted later next week. Not all positions will be posted at once.

Nurse practice committee is waiting on a few things in process. One new thing I did bring up was how the default diet is always “no hot liquids “ and nursing is constantly having to change the diet. They agreed that it is somewhat wasteful to have that for every patient when the amount of patients no hot liquids is appropriate for is quite small. Especially since it’s doubtful that the liquids would be hot enough to be harmful by the time they get from kitchen to patient room. This will be followed up with next meeting.

Conference Committee

  • Job Reports: 15 WSNA RN positions filled in February.
  • Daycare presentation: potential for staff presented by Simon Morton. The employer articulates that they have been working on this for a lengthy period of time. Working on space, budget, and a potential partnership.
  • DI, IR, CL salary position: This is a project that continues to be being worked on to ensure weekend coverage to eliminate call. There should not be scheduled cases as weekend call is for emergencies and a call in for a scheduled case is a violation of the law.
  • Break Nurses: Positions have been posted.
  • IP Pool: It has been reported that in the OR nurses are being told they must work 4 shifts before IP applies. This is a contradiction to the CBA.
  • Performance Reviews (yearly evaluations): Will begin to see more units have the manager, supervisor, and educator in the meeting with nurse to ensure support and goal setting.
  • WPV: It is reported that “wanding” for metal detection is not consistent in the ED. This poses a safety issue. The employer brings up that WPV has a lot of work to do and reminds that no WSNA nurses are attending this committee. Per CBA 2 seats and 1 Officer may attend.
  • IT: After hours, the process to re-set passwords and other IT needs is cumbersome with the need to go through the House Supervisor. We ask that the charge nurse may directly contact IT. The employer stresses the need for this to go through the HS to triage the need.

WPV Committee

The committee meets on the first Wednesday of each month. We are looking for 3-4 nurses who would like to represent.

Please contact Laurie Robinson, Nurse Representative or an Officer ASAP if you would like to be on this committee.

Grievances

  • MBU Nurses denied second vacations- Step 3 was denied by Dr. Jones. We have moved to an arbitration review.
  • RBS issue for scheduling Endoscopy – Step 1 meeting April 14
  • Disciplinary- 4 separate grievances for individual nurses.
