Health Enriched by the Arts (HEARTS), in collaboration with Admiral UCC and Providence Mt. Saint Vincent, will present two performances in a staged reading format of Nightingale: A Musical Regarding the Life and Passion of Miss Florence Nightingale by Pamela Gerke.

HEARTS will take this musical to nursing schools and organizations, health care institutions and other venues in 2019 and 2020 in celebration of Florence Nightingale's 200th birthday. Following performances, workshops for nurses and others will give participants the opportunity to respond to the show and its depiction of Florence Nightingale as an inspiring role model in the history of nursing. The activities will allow them to give expression to their own voices as nurses and health care professionals.

About the Musical:

Nightingale uses original music and dramatic scenes to bring Florence Nightingale's story to life in two acts, reframing and making her image relevant for modern audiences. Act I follows her through her 20s as she struggles to understand her passionate nature and follow her "call from God" while chafing at the expectations placed on her by her wealthy British family and Victorian society. In Act II, Florence Nightingale supervises female nurses in the Crimean War, where she creates order out of chaos despite the horror of war and opposition from entrenched medical and military authorities. By the end of the Crimean War she had become world famous and during the last fifty years of her life worked for health care reform, the creation of nurse training and the profession of nursing.

Cost:

For the September 23 performance, a donation of $15 is requested at the door.
