Webinar: Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy in Rural Communities - Part One

October 30, 2024

12:00pm–1:00pm

This two-part workshop will introduce rural healthcare providers to motivational interviewing (MI) and Getting to the Heart and Mind of the Matter Toolkit, which helps patients choose trustworthy sources of information and respond to brain-friendly promotional messages. These techniques can help providers have impactful vaccine interactions with patients in rural communities.

The focus of the workshops will be using MI in time-limited patient interactions about vaccinations. The workshops will aim to meet the needs of novice and experienced MI practitioners.

After the first workshop participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the structure and components of Motivational Interviewing;
  2. Illustrate the importance of “change talk” in MI-informed conversations;
  3. Recognize concrete, brief MI-informed strategies that can be used by medical professionals in rural settings to support patient health behavior change for topics such as vaccinations;
  4. Demonstrate how the Getting to the Heart and Mind of the Matter Toolkit can support medical professionals in rural settings to address misinformation and create brain-friendly health promotion materials.

The Getting to the Heart of the Matter Toolkit was developed for the Extension Collaborative on Immunization Teaching & Engagement (EXCITE), an Interagency Agreement with the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
