Meal Break Waivers
WSNA was notified on January 30, 2024, by HR of their intent to offer waivers to our members working 10 or 12-hour shifts. Although they did not provide a copy of the actual waiver, HR did threaten to increase nurses’ length of shift to provide the second meal period if nurses did not sign a waiver waiving the second meal period.
We immediately sent a response reminding HR WSNA is the exclusive representative for the RNs at SRH, meal and rest breaks are a mandatory subject of bargaining, and insisted they immediately cease and desist with their plan to directly deal with our members.
During our most recent contract negotiations while the current law was in effect our WSNA bargaining team negotiated and reached an agreement of one meal period for 8-, 10-, and 12-hour shifts, and our SRH WSNA members ratified that agreement.
If management moves forward insisting SRH WSNA nurses sign a waiver they will be violating federal labor law by unilaterally implementing a change in hours and working conditions as well as directly dealing with our members.
If you would like to talk about this more, please come by Taco Tuesday or Cafeteria Time.
