Black History Month is a time to honor the resilience, contributions, and achievements of Black leaders—past and present—who have shaped healthcare and the fight for equity. That fight continues today. Efforts to address health disparities and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion are facing increasing challenges, yet the need for this work has never been greater. Understanding the past and present is key to pushing forward. WSNA has gathered essential resources—including our own and others'—to help you learn, reflect, and advocate for a more just and equitable healthcare system.
WSNA’s strategic priorities. WSNA has five strategic priorities and reducing systemic racism is one of them. “WSNA will boldly embrace our commitment to antiracism. We will strive to reduce systemic racism and to achieve a more diverse nursing workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We will develop and engage internal affinity groups while strengthening and expanding our ties with specialty and labor organizations advocating for diversity, equity, inclusivity, belonging, and justice.”

The film unpacks the critical role all nurses play to achieve health equity. The film features many nurses of color discussing the work that needs to be done and why all nurses need to take part. Register for free tickets.
Racial Reckoning Statement by the American Nurses Association. On June 11, 2022, the ANA Membership Assembly, the governing and official voting body of ANA, took historic action to begin a journey of racial reckoning by unanimously approving the ANA Racial Reckoning Statement. The statement is a meaningful first step for the association to acknowledge its own past actions that have negatively impacted nurses of color and perpetuated systemic racism.
We also celebrate our longtime partnership with the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization, a Seattle-based organization for African-heritage nurses.
WSNA continuing education. Our library includes free courses on health equity, DEI, and cultural humility.
