This voluntary survey is part of a study by researchers from the University of Washington Tacoma (UWT) School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership. The purpose of this study is to explore healthcare workers experiences of workplace incivility during the COVID-19 pandemic. This exposure in the workplace is important to capture as research indicates that psychological safety has a direct impact on physical safety. Furthermore, workplace incivility has been directly linked with adverse patient outcomes, and PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other negative health outcomes in victims and targets.
The survey consists of 25 questions (some are multi-part questions) and should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. The survey will ask you questions about your experiences with work-related incivility before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey concludes with a demographic questionnaire to provide a description of participants. Questions ask about age, gender, racial identity, years licensed as a nurse, and highest educational degree earned.
Participation in this survey is voluntary and all survey responses will be kept confidential. In the course of completing this survey, you may refuse to answer specific questions. You may also choose to end the survey at any time. There are no right or wrong answers. We want to hear about your experiences and opinions, and there are no negative consequences for your answers, or if you skip questions, or if you decline to participate. There are also no direct benefits to you for participating. Participating in this study is not anticipated to produce harm or discomfort greater than would be encountered in everyday life. There is the possibility that you may be uncomfortable recounting negative workplace interactions. If you are uncomfortable with any of the questions, you may simply choose not to answer. All of the answers you provide will be maintained in a secure manner on UWT's server. We will not disclose your responses or anything about you. De-identified data from this survey will be shared with researchers across the country to get a picture of incivility experienced by nurses nation-wide.
If you choose to participate, please answer all of the questions to the best of your ability.
If you have any questions about this study, please contact the Principal Investigator Susan Johnson at slj6@uw.edu.
