If you’re driving by St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma on Wednesday, you might see nurses standing outside with ice cream and wonder what’s going on.

Nurses with the Washington State Nurses Association plan to commemorate the federal Juneteenth holiday by taking action at the hospital, 1717 S. J St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a Monday news release. They’ll pass out free frozen treats to colleagues and urge them to support a petition that asks the hospital to add Juneteenth to their contracts as a paid holiday.

“Juneteenth has been a federal and state-recognized holiday for three years now — St. Joseph Medical Center needs to get with the times,” one nurse who signed the petition said in part, according to the news release. “It’s just the beginning of the critical antiracist work that need to be done.”
